St. Andrew Catholic Church will present its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Awards at mass on Sunday, Jan.19. These awards are given to people whose service embodies the values of Dr. King, who used nonviolence, civil disobedience and Christian teaching to advance the cause of civil rights in America.

The 2025 award for Community Service goes to Paul Knauls Sr., commonly known as the “Mayor of Northeast Portland,” a nickname received after decades of business, civic and volunteer activities in Portland’s African-American community and beyond.  Social activism included large community fundraising for a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1998 the ‘Dream Statue’ was dedicated and Portland became the first city in America to have a statute of Dr. King located on a street named for him.

The parish award recognizes Bev Logan for her work with the Metropolitan Alliance for Common Good (MACG), where she trained when it was in transition from the Portland Organizing Project.  She was strongly attracted to the power of creating shared stories to bring change. In addition to her work housing newcomers, Logan continues her work as a child welfare case worker, working with children and families experiencing traumatic events.

These awards reassert the parish’s sharing in what Dr. King, in his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, called his “audacious faith in the future of mankind.” The awards are presented annually on the Sunday closest to the national holiday celebrating Dr. King. A detailed biography of each awardee will be made available on the parish website and visitors are welcome to join the parish for mass.

St. Andrew Catholic church is located on NE 9th Avenue and  NE Alberta Street.
