PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police declared a riot, made multiple arrests and used tear gas to disperse protesters in Portland, Oregon, as unruly demonstrations continue in the city.

KOIN reports a few hundred people started marching around 8 p.m Tuesday. By 10:15 p.m. police in the North Portland neighborhood declared the gathering a riot and used tear gas. Authorities say protesters continuously threw things at officers including cans, water bottles and rocks.

Several arrests were made as protests continued into early Wednesday morning.

Thousands of people have turned out every night for a nearly a month in this liberal Pacific Northwest city since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Most protesters are peaceful, but smaller numbers of people break away most nights and set small fires, tear down fences and statues and clash with police.
